Recovery after
rhinoplasty takes some time. Having proper nutrition after nose surgery can reduce this recovery time. In this article we will review some of the best post-operative foods that can help you improve and reduce your recovery time.
Eat soft foods
The first two days after surgery are very important ,avoid foods that require chewing at that time. Your surgeon will advise you to eat foods that are soft after surgery. In the first two days you will probably have to eat foods such as oatmeal, porridge, chicken soup , baked or mash potato or cooked vegetables.
Smoothies are one of the best choices you have at this time. Smoothies usually contain nutritious fruits and vegetables and can boost your energy.
Increase your fiber intake
Constipation is one of the most common complications of nose surgery and other surgeries. This complication is usually due to the use of various medications, especially anesthetics that can impair digestive function. Constipation can be very annoying and painful, so it is advised to prioritize fiber-rich foods and be sure to consume them. For example, 48 hours after surgery you can use berries and peaches that are rich in fiber.
You can also drink vegetables and fruit juices which all of them are rich in fiber, but be sure to always drink them fresh.
Some other fiber sources include:
- Whole grains
- Fruits like cantaloupe, oranges and berries
- Pasta
- Oatmeal and bread
- Vegetables like peas, potatoes and corn
Foods containing grains are among the best sources of fiber that you can eat in various forms, such as bread for breakfast, and fruits and vegetables for other meals.Try to do some physical activity as well, as it is essential to improve the digestive function.
Anti-inflammatory foods
Inflammation is one of the most common complications of rhinoplasty. Although it usually disappears during the first week, you can greatly eliminate it by taking anti-inflammatory foods.
Some foods that reduce nasal inflammation and swelling:
- olive oil
- tomato
- Green leafy vegetables
- fatty fish such as tuna, sardines and salmon
- Fruits like pineapple, oranges, berries and cherries
Most of these foods are easy to consume in duration of post-surgery recovery time.
To reduce postoperative swelling, it is recommended to avoid salty foods because it absorbs water and increases swelling.
Foods that speed up the healing processes
The nose surgery involves several incisions and, therefore, leaves wounds. These wounds that usually persist around the nose may not heal quickly. An easy way to speed up the healing of these wounds is to consume protein-rich foods.
Protein plays an effective role in wound healing. Muscles which are made of protein are wounded, so they need more protein than anything else to heal.
Some foods high in protein include:
Beans , egg , Chicken ,Red Meat , milk , SeafoodReduce caffeine intake
Caffeine increases blood pressure. As a result, it can cause many complications after surgery
Avoid spicy foods
These foods can cause you to cough and sneeze, which can be very problematic.
Some spicy foods include: Pepper ,Onion ,Turmeric ,Ginger tea, ….
Avoid processed and Convenience foods
Try to use homemade foods. Doing this will not only help you recover after the
rhinoplasty surgery, but it will also prevent many other diseases.
Ready-made foods usually contain large amounts of salt, which can absorb excess water and thereby increase swelling.
